Auckland has a vibrant nightlife scene with all the usual suspects including bars, clubs, and restaurants in ample supply, but it also caters well to those looking for a different kind of fun. Take a look below for some of the best fun things to do at night in Auckland.
1. Shop The Auckland Night Markets
Auckland’s Night Markets are immensely popular with locals and tourists alike. The Night Markets are a bustling hive of activity where market-goers can sample cuisine from a range of different cultures, shop for crafts, and sample local products while enjoying the live entertainers and performers.
The Auckland Night Markets run every day of the week (except Mondays) in different locations around the city and are open from 5p to 11 pm.
2. Ice Skate With Paradice Ice Skating
Enjoy getting out on the ice at Paradice Ice Skating. Choose from regular special events and themed skating days as well as scheduled daily session times. Don’t worry if you can’t skate – specially designed skating frames are available to help keep you the right way up!
Late-night ice skating is available Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until 10-10.30 pm. There are two ice skating rinks in Auckland, one at Avondale and one at Botany Downs.
3. Kayak With Auckland Sea Kayaks
In Auckland for the night and don’t want to miss the chance to get out on the water? Give the team at Auckland Sea Kayaks a call and join their sunset kayaking tour to Rangitoto Island. Enjoy a tranquil kayaking adventure as the sun sets across the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, hike to the summit, and get the most amazing views over Auckland’s skyline and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf as the sun goes down.
Tours depart at 4 pm and return at around 10.30 pm daily. Departures are from the St Heliers boat ramp in Tamaki Drive.
4. Be Afraid At Spookers
Visit Auckland’s only “haunted” theme park by night and be extra scared! Spookers is an entertainment experience with a difference where visitors make their way through themed haunted houses and outdoor sets decorated with the intention to scare you silly!
Spookers is open from 8 pm till late every Friday and Saturday night, visitors must be 16 years of age or older.
5. See The Stars With Stardome
Take a closer look at stars, planets, and deep space objects through the large courtyard telescopes. Learn a little about spacecraft, meteors, NASA, and space in general at the Stardome Observatory and Planetarium at the One Tree Hill Domain.
The Stardome Observatory is open late Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights until 11 pm. The Stardome Observatory is roughly 15 minutes drive from the airport.
6. Try Your Luck At Skycity
Have a go at the casino, enjoy a superb meal or check out the city lights from the Observation Deck – there is something for everyone at the Auckland Skycity Sky Tower. There are three restaurants located within the Sky Tower, and if you wish to head up to the main viewing Deck be aware it closes between 10.30 and 11 pm.
The SkyCity Casino is open 24 hours a day and offers live entertainment as well as food and beverages. Depending on traffic, the Sky Tower is approximately a 30 -40 minutes drive from the Airport.
7. Play Hard At Asylum Paintball
Designed for groups of ten or more, Asylum’s Night Paintball offers the opportunity to play traditional paintball after dark in their purpose-built arenas. Bookings are essential and all gear is provided. Paintball sessions last for 3 hours, additional paintballs are available for purchase.
Paintball at night is an all-weather activity. The Asylum Paintball arena is approximately 30 minutes drive south of Auckland Airport.
8. Get Wet With AWOL Canyoning
Canyoning at night adds a whole new dimension to this wet and wild experience. Abseil under a waterfall, explore the caves and see the glow worms with the experienced team at AWOL Canyoning.
The 5 hour night canyoning experience includes a visit to Puha Beach at sunset, refreshments, and all the necessary gear including wetsuits, abseiling equipment, and helmets.
9. Golf With JK’s Driving Range
Sharpen your golf game with New Zealand’s only 24-hour golf driving range at JK’s World Of Golf on Nixon Road, near the Airport. No bookings are required, and club hire is available. No time limits, simply by a bucket of balls and the way you go.
The driving bays are covered so golfing in wet weather is no problem, JK’s Golf Driving Range is open to all ages and abilities.
10. Bike At Night With Power Of The Pedal
For a different perspective on the city at night why not take an electric bike tour after dark. The team at Power of the Pedal offers guided small group tours taking bikers around the usual sites but at night. Travel along the waterfront, through the Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park, over to Victoria Park, and be lit up in pink as you travel the iconic ‘Te Ara I White's The Lightpath.
Night bike tours begin between 7 and 8 pm at last for around 2 hours. Minimum age of 14 years is required.
11. Relax At The Movies
Fancy a relaxing night at the movies? Auckland is blessed with several great choices for the avid movie-goer. Two theatres near the Auckland Airport are Hoyt Botany Downs in East Tamaki (a 40-minute drive) and Event Cinemas Manukau (a 20-minute drive).
Both cinemas have regular showings of the latest releases scheduled throughout the day and night. No bookings are required, check the websites for session times and prices.
12. Enjoy A Round Of Mini Golf At Treasure Island
Within walking distance of the Auckland Airport, mini-golf enthusiasts can choose from two 18 hole courses at Australasia’s largest mini-golf complex. Treasure Island mini golf takes on a pirate theme with caves, waterfalls, tombstones, cannon blasts, and a pirate ship of course! Treasure Island Mini Golf is suitable for all groups, seniors, special needs, corporate functions, and families.
No booking is required for small groups, larger group bookings can be accommodated outside of normal opening hours if required. Treasure Island is open until 9 pm most days.
