We know a thing or two about exploration, whether on foot or on the road. Queenstown is one of the most popular destinations in New Zealand for sightseeing and hiking. The adventure resort has much to offer when it comes to both. Here is our epic guide to only the best hikes in Queenstown, for all levels of fitness.
Bob’s Cove (1-2 hours return)
From Twelve Mile Delta to Bob’s Cove is a 1 to 2 hour return hike to the peaceful secluded cove. It’ll take longer than 2 hours though as you’ll be drawn into the calm waters for swimming, fishing or boating. The hike is leisurely and is especially enjoyable to Lord of the Rings fans knowing this was a filming location. Bob’s Cove is one of the most pleasant sites in Queenstown and an idyllic retreat perfect for travelling.
Difficulty: Easy
Moke Lake Loop Track (2-3 hours return)
A grassland walk amidst a mountainous backdrop sure to blow your mind. This 2 to 3 hour return takes you to Moke Lake, a perfect sunset spot on a reflective lake painted with the clouds, mountains and sun. A loop track also has the added draw that you don’t pass the same point twice but returns to the same point you started. An easy, no-fuss hike, full of beauty.
Difficulty: Easy
Queenstown Hill (2-3 hours return)
A central and easily accessible uphill hike, Queenstown Hill can be reached on foot from any hotel, cafe or shop from the centre of Queenstown. Also a loop track, the Hill is a steep uphill climb and steep downhill return. Although moderate fitness is required, it isn’t far in length at a 2.5km return – and definitely worth the cardio with stunning landscape views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range.
Difficulty: Moderate
Ben Lomond (6-8 hours return)
The hardest hike on our list, the Ben Lomond track takes you on a long and difficult hike to reach the 1,748m summit. The walk from Bob’s Peak to Ben Lomond saddle is a relatively gentle uphill ascent, but from the saddle to the summit the track becomes considerably steeper and more technical with loose rocks and slippery tussocks – so pack your hiking boots. 360 degree views await, however, with everything from the lake to the mountains to the Southern Alps. The weather is something to watch, as at this altitude in this particular region, things can change fast and you should be equipped with appropriate clothing and equipment.
