The must-do road trips of NZ

When it comes to the end of summer, there are always two words on our lips: Road trips. It must be something with the looming Autumn weather and tangible lack of long sunny travel days that always get us hyped for putting four wheels on the road and heading outwards into the great unknown. With mountainous, coastal and city road spectacles to choose from, we’ve put together a top guide to our top 4 drives. Fire up the engine of your affordable rental and accelerate all the way to one of these:

1) Forgotten World Highway

Who says road trips need to last all day? At less than 100 miles, the Forgotten World Highway is an iconic drive. This is an exploration of century-old bridle paths in remote corners of the land. With tricky twists and turns to navigate, rent one of our SUV range to take on this rugged road. Head out from Stratford or Taumarunui and meander through the one-lane tunnel and winding river gorge that follows. Just beware much of the road consists of loose gravel and the only place to stop off is the little town of Whangamomona.

2) East Coast City Hopping

Sometimes on a good road trip, there isn’t just one destination. Hop from city to city as you visit the South Island’s East Coast from Christchurch to Dunedin. You might want to pack your camera for a mix of modern cities, historic buildings and magnificent beaches down the coastline. Dunedin’s gothic architecture is the endpoint where you can enjoy the Otago peninsula.

3) Milford Road

Without a doubt one of the greatest highways on the planet, Milford Road is a four-hour drive from Queenstown to the monumental Milford Sound. Taking in the sights of Queenstown before a ride purely made up of snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, glassy lakes and wild fiords, what more could you ask for? How about your destination being a natural phenomenon of steep cliffs, incredibly deep waters and the chance to see penguins, dolphins and whales? All on one tank of gas.

4) West Side

If sightseeing is your jam, the West Coast trip might be the one for you. Leave Greymouth in the dust and head south to Mount Aspiring National Park. The most visited sites on the way there are the unique rock formations of Pancake Rocks, Hokitika Gorge, Franz-Josef and Fox Glaciers, Bruce Bay and Haast.

If that doesn’t get the petrol heads pumping, we don’t know what will! Book your road trip rental vehicle today to prepare for your final summer holiday.
