Taking a road trip to the far north of New Zealand is one of the best holidays you can have in summer. Many kiwis head to Northland every year as it is a fantastic destination and a good summer here can go from November through to April. The beaches are amazing and the sea temperature makes for great swimming and water activities. One of my favourite places is Tutukaka, which is a very popular spot with divers and fisherman.
Tutukaka is the leaving point for boats heading out to the Poor Knights Islands. This is a world renowned diving site and a protected marine reserve. Book a cruise to the Poor Knights to try snorkelling, diving, bird watching or just a spot of sunbathing. The trip will take about 35 minutes, and is suitable for all the family.
Tutukaka Harbour is bordered by some beautiful white sandy beaches where you can try your hand at fishing, kayaking and surfing, or take a bush walk to beautiful Whale Bay.
Check out the cafes or try the fish and chips (which always manage to taste better by the sea) then visit the art gallery and browse the craft shops.
Northland is a beautiful part of New Zealand where the beaches are beautiful and not too populated. It’s worth staying for a few days to really get into the summer holiday kind of feeling and there is plenty of accommodation on the Tutukaka Coast from hotels and B&Bs to holiday parks and backpackers.
