One rental car company is the same as all the rest, right? Not quite. Each has different rules from the rest. Some are a little bit sneaky and some companies are completely transparent and want their customers to enjoy an ‘easy ride’ when it comes to hiring cars. We’re part of the latter and so we’ve even put together this simple guide of things to avoid when booking your hire car, as well as how to avoid nasty extra costs and surprises.
Book Far in Advance
The most efficient way of getting the best price for your rental is by booking early. Booking now with NZ Rent a Car will save you money on your rental as the company can plan its fleet in advance and therefore reward you with a cheaper price. It also means you are organised early for stress-free travel.
Return the Hire Car to the Place You Picked it Up
The cheapest type of car hire is a return car rental, meaning you pick up your vehicle for a hire period before returning it to the same location. This is lower in cost as it is easier logistically for the hire company to have the car returned rather than it going to another drop-off point. Not all hire companies do, but at NZ Rent a Car we do offer one-way rental. Whilst a slightly more expensive option, we keep things affordable in order to provide our customers with exactly what they want.
Permitted Kilometre Usage
Make sure you understand your car hire terms and conditions before your rental period to avoid surprise costs. Our agreement is explained upfront; for one and two-day car hires there is a mileage allowance of 100kms per day, with a per-kilometre charge applicable above this. For hires 3 days or more there is an unlimited kilometre allowance.
Take Photos Of The Car You’re Renting
Don’t worry, we’ll remind you to do this on pick up. We check the car for cosmetic damage before handing you the keys and ask you to do the same, in case we missed anything. This way, when you return the car we both know the condition of the car before and after your rental period to avoid disagreements over any damage when the car is returned.
Full to Full Fuel Tank
To keep things simple, we operate a full to full fuel tank policy, meaning to provide the car with a full tank and expect you to provide it with a full tank. Simply fill up at a nearby petrol station before returning your car to drop it off.
