The golden sands of Tahunanui Beach, Kaiteriteri Beach, Cable Bay, and Golden Bay over Takaka Hill will always welcome you, as will the cool waters on one of our many sunny days.
Even a simple walk around our gorgeous city can be as planned or as unplanned as you want it to be. For a loose framework, you can wander along the Maitai River, which winds its way through the CBD before crossing the footbridge to the base of Botanical Hill. Right on top is the Centre of New Zealand viewing platform, and while there is some dispute as to whether it is the actual centre of our country, there is no argument that the views are amazing, over Tasman Bay and the Western Ranges. By now, you’ll be keen to come back down to the city following the water’s edge and enjoy a refreshing local craft beer or wine. You’ll be spoilt for choice.
Nelson is so perfectly located that you can make easy day trips too, and all on the spur of the moment if you like. Motueka, Takaka, the alpine village of St Arnaud, Mapua, and Moutere are just a few places close at hand, and they’re all fascinating in their own right. Again, no booking required.
Our point is, while it pays to book as early as you can if you want to secure the best accommodation, or event tickets, or our car hire in Nelson, a spring and summer holiday in our region can still be largely unplanned and unstructured – in other words, you can do what you want and in your own time.
