With that in mind, here is one of the best pieces of advice we can share with you: when driving in and around Queenstown, take your time. It’s best to set an unhurried schedule as there is so much to stop and explore, and it will keep you safer on the roads as well.
The road trip between Queenstown and Glenorchy is a prime example of why it’s best to explore at your leisure. This is a 45-kilometre journey, but this short drive is one of the world’s most scenic. If you were to go directly to Glenorchy without stopping, it would take about 45 minutes. But why get there so quickly when there are plenty of reasons to stop for some amazing photo opportunities along the way? They include:
- Wilson Bay, 10km from Queenstown. The first place to pull over and start snapping. There’s a secluded beach under your feet and wonderful views ahead of you.
- Bob’s Cove Track, 14km from Queenstown. An easy stroll around a forest and scenic cove will bring you to a lookout with incredible views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables.
- Bennett’s Bluff Lookout, 24km from Queenstown. If you want to post some instant Instagram classics, this is where to do it. There are postcard-perfect views of Lake Wakatipu and the mountain backdrop.
These are just a few examples of why motoring around our region should be done with plenty of time on your hands. There are many places to pull over and take in the incredible scenery. But there are practical reasons too. During summer, there is lots of traffic on the road, and the route from Queenstown to Glenorchy can bend and wind as the road follows the shores of Lake Wakatipu. It can be narrow too, so adhering to the speed limit and being patient when in traffic is important. If you can, travel early to beat the rush but if you can’t, be cool, calm and collected.
