Road Trip: Auckland to Wellington
Road trips are an adventure, whether they take one day or one month. You may want to get from A to B quickly or you may want to relax, take your time and experience New Zealand in all its glory. One of our favourite road trips, and a pretty common one, is Auckland to Wellington. If done in one go it takes around 8 hours of driving. However, there is so much to see between here and there, you could turn it into a multi-day drive and even spend weeks out on the road, zig-zagging from West to East to West and back again down through the North Island. First, you need a car. Hire one from NZ Rent A Car and hit the road. Here’s how to take on the road trip in a variety of different ways.
Speed: Get there fast
In theory, you can drive to Wellington in a day. This is best done with two drivers as it can be a long day in the driver’s seat. For a day full of driving like this. You need comfort and power. That’s why our powerful 6-cylinder sedans are perfect for the job. They offer sophisticated performance and can easily stick at motorway speeds for hundreds of kilometres at a time. The best way to get to north to south is to visit an Auckland branch to pick up your luxury sedan and stick closely to Highway 1 to Hamilton and Highway 4 to Wellington. The more time on the motorway, the quicker it will be.
Travel: Take your time
Perhaps time isn’t of the essence and you just want to enjoy a longer and more enjoyable road trip south. Our spacious station wagons offer the room needed to take all your belongings for the sport orientated traveller. Fill the boot with everything, from hiking boots to kites to bodyboards for the ocean. East Coast and West Coast Roads are the best way to take your time on some of the country’s best roads.
See: Scenic Route
If the most important thing to you is seeing the sights in a number of different ways, you’ll want a vehicle that can do it. Nothing beats our 4×4 SUV fleet for being prepared for wherever your road trip takes you. New Zealand has some of the best gravel roads you can drive over. Why not take Motu Road Gorge, best known for being a special stage during past rally events with 50km of epic scenery. Or Whanganui River Road which meanders along the famous river with 20km of gravel remaining.
