North Island: Hidden Gems | NZ Rent A Car
So many of us Kiwi’s don’t take the time to truly appreciate New Zealand. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or have a limited time to experience the North Island, we’ve put together a must-do guide of some hidden (and not so hidden gems) you just gotta see! Let’s get straight into it.
Cape Reinga
Always start at the top. As far as road trips go, we’re not sure anything matches the beauty of heading up Northland’s Twin Coast Highway littered with the most golden beaches we have to offer. As remote as it is beautiful, hitting the most northern point of New Zealand is a sight to behold with the famous walk down to the lighthouse.
Waitomo Caves
Be transported into another galaxy in a maze of underground limestone caves lit with glowworms. Explore the caves one of three ways; on a boat tour, a guided walk or (our favourite) a Black Water Rafting trip. These beautiful networks of dark tunnels could easily be a wonder of the world.
Hot Water Beach
Have you ever wished the ocean was a little bit warmer? Us too. Drive the lovely roads out East to our very own Coromandel Peninsula and head to the 365 day beach, Hot Water Beach. You’ll be met by a gorgeous beach… but this one is different. Dig down into the sand and create a natural hot pool to lounge in at any time of year. Come on in, the water’s hot!
Dive Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve
Snorkel and scuba dive your way through the the caves, arches, tunnels and sheer cliffs of one of the world’s best diving hotspots. With fish galore and beautiful underwater landscapes this is not one to be missed!
Tongariro National Park
Not one, not two but three volcanoes sit within Tongariro National Park. Hike the majestic walk to the summits and feel on top of the world in the most wild of environments. There’s not many places you can do that. If you’re a movie fan, seek out the spots Lord of the Rings was filmed in these breathtaking volcanic landscapes that made up Middle Earth.
